1616 - The Spanish poet Cervantes died in Madrid.

1616 - Playwright William Shakespeare died in Stratford-on-Avon, England.

1789 - President-elect George Washington and his wife moved into the first executive mansion, the Franklin House in New York City.

1791 - James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States, was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

1928 - Child actress Shirley Temple was born in Santa Monica, California.

1940 - About 200 people died in a dance-hall fire in Natchez, Mississippi.

1968 - 300 Columbia University students barricaded the office of the college dean, charging the university with supporting the Vietnam War and violating Harlem residents' civil rights. The students occupied several campus buildings for over a week.

1969 - Sirhan Sirhan was sentenced to death (later reduced to a life sentence) for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

1971 - The Rolling Stones album "Sticky Fingers" was released.

1985 - The Coca-Cola Co. announced it was changing the secret formula for Coke. (Negative public reaction forced the company to later return to the original formula.)

1998 - James Earl Ray, convicted of assassinating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., died.

1950 - The Detroit Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers for the Stanley Cup.

1954 - The NBA adopted the 24-second shot clock.

1954 - Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit the first of his 755 career home runs in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

1964 - Ken Johnson of the Houston Astros threw the first no-hitter for a loss in major league history. The game was lost 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds due to two errors.

1969 - Los Angeles Lakers guard Jerry West scored 53 points in a 120-118 win over the Boston Celtics in the opening game of the NBA Finals.

1989 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played his last regular season game in the NBA.

1989 - The Dallas Cowboys selected UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman with the first pick in the NFL Draft.
